POEM OF THE DAY

Sorrow

Bring sugar
for this aching throat that
remembers the day we parted,
like a Chinese funeral,
where mourners pass through
a simple shrine,
throw carnations into the grave hole,
bite down on hard candy,
sucking on the juices
and tears, drunk
with sweetness
of life
and bitterness
of death.
